Foreword of the World Tourism Directory 1995/1996 by Antonio Enriquez Savignac, Secretary-General World Tourism Organization

The World Tourism Organization is proud to be associated with the publication of the new three-volume World Tourism Directory - the industry's most comprehensive listing of tourism contacts and an important tool for tourism development.
WTO's mission is to develop tourism as a significant means of fostering international peace and understanding, economic development and international trade.

Tourism is the world's largest industry. Over the past 40 years, it has expanded an average of 7% a year in arrivals and 12 a year in receipts - a growth record unmatched by any other economic sector.
It is also an industry that continues to grow rapidely. New destinations are emerging as countries realize the important economic and social benefits of tourism and the number of people travelling abroad, many for the first time, is rising.
WTO forecast international arrivals worldwide to reach 661 million by the year 2000, up from approximately 528 million in 1994, and arrifals are predicted to reach 937 million by 2020. Much of this phenomela growth will take place in the most remote corners of the planet, pakes that are relatively new to organized tourism, especially in Asia and Latin America.

Tourism is a very complex industry. It is radically different from other industries, such as manufacturing, where a single company controls production, packaging and marketing of a product.
More than any other human activity, tourism is a collaboration among a host of diverse organizations, companies and individuals in a variety of different locations around the world.
Government, tourism promotion boards, tour operators, travel agencies and many other groups all play important roles in enticing an individual to travel and providing that traveller with a rewarding experience. Communication among these various players is essential to the success of our industry and what is why a resource tool such as the World Tourism Directory is so vital for the development of tourism.
It is a reference book that will certainly be consulted often and greatly appreciated in the offices of travel professionals the world over. The World Tourism Organization is pleased to have a part in the publication of this directory.
